What is Executive Presence?

The X factor, irresistible energy, at ease yet powerful, very interesting, open minded, amazing speaker, when s/he talks people listen, followship, inspiring, charismatic! These are just some of the labels that are used to define people that have this very coveted and desirable thing called executive presence. You can’t exactly say what it is, but it is very palpable to the senses. You can see it, feel it, sense it, hear it.

Executive presence, also termed as leadership presence (terms I use interchangeably) is a subtle energy that some people exude. Executive presence is in fact a combination of a multitude of factors. It stems from a combination of well-developed personality and character traits that make for a dynamic executive and individual. It is a charismatic presence that exudes both ease and confidence at the same time. People are drawn to this energy and feel automatically inspired and motivated in its presence. Some of these character attributes can be noticed, in how these individuals interact with others, their level of knowledge and expertise in their chosen field, how self-aware they are, and very importantly how they present themselves as an overall package to the world.

What has Executive Presence got to do with personal and professional success?

The truth about executive presence is that it is almost synonymous with success and leadership. It is present as a quality in most successful men and women. These individuals seem to have a higher dose of “Life force energy” flowing through them. They seem to have success in all aspects of life, and one wonders where they get all this energy from, yet they never seem flustered or nervous. This energy that they exude is magnetic.

In the corporate setting, executive presence is vital, because it increases one’s ability to positively influence the people around you. This is not just necessary when you are leading people, so you can rally them behind your mission and vision, it is also necessary when you are working towards creating change in the workplace or the world at large. We need to be able to influence people to rally them around the cause that means something to us. However, our ability to influence is greatly magnified when it comes from an authentic and credible space.

In a research report by Talent Plus on Executive Presence, it was said.

Executive presence is associated (often synonymously) with leadership. Of the more than 350 HR professionals we asked, 92% agree that executive presence is an important part of leadership. While only 15% say a lack of executive presence can derail a career, most agree (51%) that it is an accelerator that propels a career forward by differentiating individuals from others. Further, 77% of respondents agree that those with high levels of executive presence progress quickly in their careers. Most HR practitioners (51%) agree that it is difficult to define executive presence, but despite this lack of clear criteria, only 19% of respondents agree that it’s difficult to identify people with executive presence. Executive presence continues to be an “I know it when I see it,” concept—identifiable but undefinable. Source

I believe we can in fact define and cultivate it.
