What is desire?
Desire comes in many forms, and is most easily attributed to sexual desire, but it is so much more than that. However, the beauty and sensuality of desire is most easily felt in an attraction towards another being, which is why it has become associated with that.
We all have felt the sensual kiss of desire. That desire that desperately wants to move us towards our object of affection. The desire that makes life force move through us with excitement and motivation. The desire that makes us wake up each morning and jump out of bed. The desire to look and feel beautiful for another. The desire to fulfil our soul destiny, the desire to achieve, evolve, grow, potentialize.
What is the Desire Body?
Our desire body is a subtle energetic field that carries within it all our soul desires. The soul desires are real desires which want to be expressed through the human body that one is born with. These soul desires get buried deep within our subconscious and are unable to express themselves under the weight of our social, familial, and religious conditioning. In this conditioning, we are taught we need to be a certain way, do certain things, and have certain things – which is what “normal” people do. So, we get caught up in this ego identity that we create to fit in with the world we are born in.
However, the desire body may have desires in it, that are not conducive to the conditioning that we have gone through. In this case, we will spend and expend a lot of energy denying our desires or resisting the desire body.
Take for example – As a woman, we may be conditioned to believe that wanting children and family is part of who we are. Our ego identity wants to fit in, so believes that is what it must want as well. Now let us say, your soul desire is to express yourself as an independent and free woman with a career that inspires you, then your soul and your ego identity will have to deal with a lot of inner and outer conflict. (Case in point – Jennifer Aniston)
Similarly, as a man – You may have been conditioned to be strong, and tough, and show no emotion, but your soul desire is to learn to be in touch with your emotional self, and express yourself fully, then again there will be conflict.
Why is the desire body important?
Taking ownership of our desire body is necessary if we want to fully potentialize. Our desires hold the key to our potential. The soul came here with a plan, it wants to express itself in certain ways. When it embodies, on Earth, it then takes on an ego identity based on our surroundings. This ego identity is limiting for the soul. Think of an egg – and imagine the shell as the ego conditioned self. For the egg to become a chicken, it needs to break down the structure and safety that was provided by the shell, or it would never grow. After a while, it would just rot inside, or be eaten by someone else.
The same is true for our ego and soul identity. The ego identity likes safety, is afraid to break out, because then it must deal with whatever is out there for it to explore and experience. Within the shell, it’s at least safe – but can’t experience the fullness of life that can be experienced with being alive in the world. To break out of the shell, we have to learn to be in touch and follow the impulses of our desire body.
What prevents us from taking ownership of our desires?
We often associate desires with suffering, how can we not? We were never empowered nor educated on understanding our own self. Desires cause suffering because we don’t understand the essence of our desire body. It is not simply; I want something, and I can have it. Following the impulses of the desire body requires skillful discernment, wisdom, and lots of courage. These soul desires are quite different from our ego desires, which is primarily concerned with fitting in with the world. The soul identity is interested in expressing it’s unique identity, in a way that is meaningful and impactful to the world or humanity at large. This we call purpose.
Here are some of the reasons why most of us, won’t take take ownership of our desires:
- Conditional – We place conditions on how we want our desires to manifest, based on what is acceptable to and appeases the ego identity.
- Doubt – We doubt that we can manifest our desires causing us to deny them instead
- Fear and Resistance – We are afraid of taking ownership of our desires because we fear we will be disappointed. Alternatively, we fear we will have out of control desires.
- Judgement – Our ego identity continues its judgmental stance based on conditioning towards our soul desires.
Anger, fear, doubt, shame, judgement are emotional states that keep us from flowing with the river of the desire body.
Getting to know your desire body
The desire body is always talking to us. It is the deep inner knowing that something is amiss. It is the longing that stays buried in the heart. It is the emptiness that strikes us from time to time, knowing that we are not following our heart. Long term, not taking ownership of this aspect of us, can cause us to even fall sick and be diseased. The conflict between the ego and the soul is a battlefield, as explained through the Mahabharata, and instructed from Krishna to Arjuna. This conflict can create much emotional suffering, and if not tended to, will turn into physical suffering.
In my experience, taking ownership of our desires seems daunting because we get caught up in how we will ever make it happen.
Here is a few tips to get you started on your journey to your potential:
- First is to set the intention that you are willing to open yourself to receiving information from your desire body. Begin to open yourself, let go of denying and resisting. Simply listen.
- Don’t think about how I will get what I want. The how will follow your decision to pursue or receive your desires.
- Take a quiet moment, be still, center yourself connect with your heart. And then simply ask your heart what it wants from you – and write down without opinion or judgement what flows.
- Write statements like:
- I deeply desire ….
- My heart wants
- The woman in me desires…
- The intellect in me….
- The potential in me wants to….
- Make a decision to pursue at least one of your desires. And see what happens. Deciding is the key for the universe to then start providing for the resources, courage and abilities to make your desires come true.
- You will know a true desire, because it will make your whole being come alive, and once you decide to follow it, the courage to act will come forth.
Everything we ever want to have a fulfilling happy life, is in our desire body. Get to know it and then flow with it.
